ਇਹ ਨਾਵਲ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਕਿਸਾਨੀ ਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸਦੀ ਨੂੰ ਸੰਪੂਰਨਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਤ੍ਰਾਸਦੀ ਆਰਥਿਕ, ਸਮਾਜਿਕ, ਸਭਿਆਚਾਰਕ ਤੇ ਮਾਨਸਿਕ ਹੈ । ਕਿਸਾਨ ‘ਅੰਨਦਾਤਾ’ ਹੈ, ਉਸਦੀ ਤ੍ਰਾਸਦੀ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਸਭ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ, ਪਰ ਇਸ ਨਿਘਾਰ ਨੂੰ ਦੂਰ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਕੁਝ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ । ਇਹ ਨਾਵਲ ਘੁੰਮਣਘੇਰੀ ਵਿਚ ਫਸੇ ਕਿਸਾਨ ਦੀ ਪੇਸ਼ਕਾਰੀ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਉਜੱੜ ਰਹੇ ਪਰਿਵਾਰ ਦੇ ਦੁੱਖਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਾਸਤਾਨ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਦੁੱਖ ਅਵਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਵੀ ਦੇਣ ਹਨ ਤੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਗਤ ਵੀ ਹਨ । ਨਾਵਲ ਦੀ ਵਿਧੀ ਵਿਡੰਬਨਾ ਦੀ ਵਿਧੀ ਹੈ । ਬਲਦੇਵ ਸਿੰਘ ਨੇ ਨਾਵਲ ਵਿਚ ਉਜਾੜੇ ਅਤੇ ਕਿਸਾਨੀ ਦੁਖਾਂਤ ਦੀਆਂ ਅੰਦਰਲੀਆਂ ਸਥਿਤੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੈ । ਨਾਵਲ ਵਿਚ ਕੁਝ ਅਜਿਹੇ ਗਲਪੀ-ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਭੁੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਕਦੇ । This novel presents the tragedy of Punjabi farmers in its entirety. The narrative revolves around a farmer caught in a web of difficulties, detailing the sorrows of a struggling family. These sorrows are both situational and personal. The novel employs a tragic method to convey its message.
