ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਕਾਰੀ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਕੋਸ਼ ਇਕ ਮੀਲ-ਪੱਥਰ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿਚ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਦੀ ਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਸਮੁੱਚੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ-ਭੰਡਾਰ ਦੇ ਮੂਲ ਭਾਸ਼ਾਈ ਰੂਪ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਗ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਬਣਦੇ ਅਰਥ ਨਿਰੂਪਿਤ ਕੀਤੇ ਗਏ ਹਨ । ਇਹ ਕੋਸ਼ ਭਾਈ ਵੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਦੇ ਨਾਨਾ ਜੀ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਅਣਥੱਕ ਮਿਹਨਤ, ਲਗਨ, ਖੋਜ ਸਦਕਾ ਤਿਆਰ ਹੋਇਆ, ਜੋ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ 1899 ਈ: ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਸੀ । ਬਾਅਦ ਵਿਚ ਭਾਈ ਵੀਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ ਵੱਲੋਂ 7 ਸਾਲ (1920-27) ਦੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਨਾਲ ਇਹ ਕੋਸ਼ ਨਵੇਂ ਸਿਰਿਉਂ ਨਵੀਂ ਤਰਤੀਬ ਦੇ ਲਿਖਿਆ, ਖੋਜਿਆ, ਸੁਧਾਰਿਆ ਤੇ ਕਈ ਪੱਖਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਹੋਰ ਵਿਸਥਾਰ ਸਹਿਤ ਵਾਧਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ । ਭਾਈ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਜੀ ਦੀ ਅਦੁੱਤੀ ਵਿਦਵਤਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਇਹ ਬਹੁਤ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਤੇ ਵਿਆਪਕ ਕੋਸ਼ ਬਣ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ । ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ਦੇ ਅਰਥਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਮਝਣ ਲਈ ਇਹ ਕੋਸ਼ ਬਹੁਤ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਹੈ ।
