ਬਲਦੇਵ ਸਿੰਘ ਦਾ ਇਹ ਨਾਵਲ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਪਿੰਡਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੱਦੀ-ਪੁਸ਼ਤੀ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਕਾਰਨ, ਜ਼ਰ, ਨੂੰ ਪਿਛੋਕੜ ਵਿਚ ਰੱਖ ਕੇ ਦੱਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਇਹ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣੀਆਂ ਹੁਣ ਇਕ ਵੱਖਰਾ ਰੂਪ ਵਟਾ ਕੇ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਆ ਰਹੀਆਂ ਹਨ । ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੋ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਹਾਣੀ ਇਸ ਨਾਵਲਿਟ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੇਸ਼ ਹੈ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣੀ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਸਰਪੰਚ ਦੀ ਚੋਣ ਤੋਂ ਬੱਝਦਾ ਹੈ । ਇਹ ਚੋਣ ਅਸਿੱਧੇ ਰੂਪ ਵਿੱਚ ਸਾਡੇ ਪੇਂਡੂ ਸਮਾਜ ਦੀਆਂ ਜੱਦੀ-ਪੱਸ਼ਤੀ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਆਧਾਰ ਨਾਲ ਹੀ ਜਾ ਜੁੜਦੀ ਹੈ । ਜ਼ਰ, ਜੋਰੂ, ਜ਼ਮੀਨ ਦੇ ਝਗੜੇ ਤੇ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਦੀ ਲਾਲਸਾ ਗੁਰਮੇਲ ਦੀ ਸਰਪੰਚੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਬਿੰਬਤ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ । ਏਥੇ ਹੀ ਸਾਰੀ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣੀ ਤੇ ਦੋ ਪਰਿਵਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਬਰਬਾਦੀ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਢ ਬੱਝਦਾ ਹੈ । ਲੇਖਕ ਸਮੁੱਚੇ ਨਾਵਲ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਸੇਧ (ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ) ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਕ ਗੰਭੀਰ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਕਰਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ-‘ਕੀ ਕੋਈ ਅਜਿਹਾ ਸਮਾਜ ਨਹੀਂ ਸਿਰਜਿਆ ਜਾ ਸਕਦਾ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਰਮੀਤ ਤੇ ਤੇਜਵੰਤ ਦੇ ਪਿਆਰ ਨੂੰ ਇਹ ਹੀਰੋਸ਼ੀਮਾ ਦੀ ਤਬਾਹੀ ਵਰਗੀਆਂ ਭਿਆਨਕ ਦੁਸ਼ਮਣੀਆਂ ਗ੍ਰਹਿਣ ਨਾ ਸਕਣ ।
