1937-38 ਵਿੱਚ ਜਦੋਂ ਪਲੋਮਰ ਪਰਬਤ (ਕੈਲੀਫ਼ੋਰਨੀਆ) ’ਤੇ 200 ਇੰਚੀ ਟੈਲੀਸਕੋਪ ਲਗਾਉਣ ਦਾ ਫੈਸਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਤਾਂ ਪੱਤਰਕਾਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੈੱਸ ਕਾਨਫਰੰਸ ਦੌਰਾਨ ਆਰਥਰ ਐਵਡੰਗਟਨ ਅਤੇ ਐਡਵਿਨ ਹਬਲ ਨੂੰ ਸਵਾਲ ਕੀਤਾ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਟੈਲੀਸਕੋਪ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਕੀ ਖੋਜੋਂਗੇ?’’ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਦਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਸੀ, “ਜੇਕਰ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਦਾ ਉੱਤਰ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਹੀ ਪਤਾ ਹੋਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਇਸ ਟੈਲੀਸਕੋਪ ਨੂੰ ਲਗਾਉਣ ਦੀ ਕੀ ਜ਼ਰੂਰਤ ਰਹਿ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ?’’ ਇਹ ਵਾਜਬ ਤੇ ਜਾਇਜ਼ ਉੱਤਰ ਸੀ। ਪਰ ਅੱਜ ਦੇ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਨ ਨੂੰ ਹੀ ਜਾਇਜ਼ ਕਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਦਾ ਅਰਥ ਇਹ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਮਨ ਬਣਾ ਲਿਆ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੀ ਖੋਜਾਂਗੇ! ਇਸ ਤਕਨੀਕ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੁਝ ਨਵਾਂ ਨਹੀਂ ਖੋਜ ਸਕਦੇ, ਸਿਵਾਏ ਕਿਸੇ ਦੁਰਲੱਭ ਜਿਹੇ ਤੁੱਕੇ ਦੇ।

In 1937-38, when the decision was made to install a 200-inch telescope on Palomar Mountain (California), journalists at a press conference asked Arthur Eddington and Edwin Hubble, "What will you discover with this telescope?" Their response was, "If you already know the answer to your question, then what is the need to install this telescope?" This was a valid and reasonable answer. However, in today’s science, we have constrained ourselves by thinking we already know what we will discover. This implies that we have limited our explorations, believing that we cannot find anything new through this technology, except perhaps a rare coincidence.
