Nineteen Eighty-Four (also known as 1984) is a dystopian novel and a cautionary tale written by English author George Orwell. Its central theme revolves around the consequences of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and oppressive societal rules controlling people and their behaviors. Orwell, a staunch believer in democratic socialism and a member of the anti-Stalinist left, based the novel on Britain’s political conditions influenced by Stalin-era Soviet Union and Nazi Germany’s similar practices. Broadly, the novel also explores the role of truth and facts in societies and how they can be manipulated.
